United Way Seeking Labour Director


The United Way of Winnipeg, a community-based, volunteer-driven, non-profit organization that works to create opportunities for a better life for everyone, is currently looking to hire a Labour Director to join their team. Reporting to United Way of Winnipeg's President and Winnipeg Labour Council President, the Labour Director works to build relationships within and between the Labour Community, Winnipeg Labour Council, Canadian Labour Congress-affiliated unions, United Way of Winnipeg and community agencies and organizations.

In a non-partisan manner, the Labour Director solicits, secures and stewards union involvement in a community-wide effort to create healthier communities through United Way including:

Working with the Winnipeg Labour Council to identify labour representatives for boards and committees at United Way and various social service agencies.

Working with the President of United Way of Winnipeg to inform, counsel, and coordinate activities which may affect the labour support for United Way.

Finding opportunities to enhance and expand relationships amongst senior levels of United Way of Winnipeg and Labour organizations.

Acting as a liaison on all matters between United Way of Winnipeg and the Winnipeg Labour Council, as well as between unions, union leaders, community and social service agencies.

Developing and coordinating a Union Counsellor Program and other education programs and seminars designed to meet the needs of union and community members alike.

Where necessary, acting as a mediator in conflict resolution between various stakeholders.

You are an experienced facilitator who has had three or more years active involvement as a member of a union that is in good standing and affiliated with the Canadian Labour Congress. You are committed to the philosophy and objectives of United Way of Winnipeg and possess:

Grade 12 or equivalent plus additional relevant training and education.

Strong project and/or program management skills.

Experience in liaising and mediation between various organizations and labour, with a successful track record in developing solid partnerships.

Demonstrated experience in conflict resolution, particularly in diverse groups of stakeholders.

Ability to take initiative, work independently and as part of a team, and use imagination and resourcefulness.

Excellent interpersonal and strong oral and written communication skills.

Experience in fundraising, and social services environment will be considered an asset.
