We are the political and social voice of working people in Winnipeg, on Treaty 1 Territory.

President, Melissa Dvorak, on the impact of COVID-19 on Winnipeg’s Labour Movement:

“Having a Labour Council is especially important during these unprecedented times. COVID has impacted everyone in our city. It has changed the way we work, socialize, and the ways we come together as community. The WLC is a place where labour can get together - to share experiences, ideas, and how we, as a Council can help one another to keep connected.”

Our mission is to be a strong political and social voice of working people in Winnipeg. We were founded in 1894 and played a pivotal role in building Winnipeg into the great city it is today!

Solidarity and Action!

Since it was founded in 1894, the WLC has been actively involved in advancing and advocating for the rights and protections of workers in all sectors of work.

The Winnipeg Labour Council has a long history of organizing and supporting strong community engagement and collaboration. In addition to responding to, and influencing city council, the WLC works with the Manitoba Federation of Labour (MFL) and the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC), to implement pro Union programs and messaging in the community.

From labour events, to rallies and marches, the WLC works to build stronger movements, and connect with communities, members and Unions. If you are interested in being a part of the solidarity and action, click below and Take Action!

Our Affiliates.

Over 45,000 members of affiliated Unions in the Winnipeg area are entitled to participate in Labour Council activities - and we encourage all to join the strength of Winnipeg’s Labour movement through affiliation!

Winnipeg Labour Council meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month, at 6:30pm. If your local Union is not affiliated to the WLC, speak to your Union executive about becoming affiliated. Your solidarity and participation in the WLC will help strengthen the voice of Labour in the Winnipeg region.

Events.

No two years at The Winnipeg Labour Council are the same, however, we do have a core number of annual events that celebrate and showcase the strengths of Winnipeg’s Labour movement. Winnipeg Labour Council affiliates, delegates and Union members are invited to join us!

The WLC is also very active in collaborating, co-organizing and supporting many community events and marches with, and for, Winnipeg’s labour movement. To learn more about the equity and worker-action related events and days of recognition, click below:

Resources for Union Members.

Unions need working people, and working people need Unions. Unions depend on active and involved members to make sure the Labour movement thrives, the needs of its members met, and that it can advocate for the social and economic justice of future generations.

“The Winnipeg Labour Council lobbies for, and supports strategies to create a city where no one is left behind - a safe and vibrant city where there is a strong sense of community, a feeling of fairness, and a place where citizens are proud to be.”
