Winnipeg's Annual May Day March is this Saturday, May 1. Activities begin at 12:30 noon in the City Hall courtyard with comments from labour and human rights activists including MFL President Kevin Rebeck - Denis Lemelin, National President CUPW - Cathy Woods, Chair Aboriginal Workers Council - and Marianne Cerelli, community activist.
Other participants at the start and during the march will include the Winnipeg Labour Council's presentation of the Bruce MacKay Solidarity award, the Radical Cheerleaders doing cheers during the march, the Fem Rev group, the Buffalo Gals Drum group, and the Flaming Trolleys marching band. The speeches and presentations begin at 12:30 with the march itself getting underway at 1 p.m. After leaving city hall, it'll go south on Main to Broadway, down Broadway to Smith, north on Smith to Portage, east on Portage to Notre Dame, then onto Notre Dame to Albert Street, returning to Old Market Square for singing the International and the end of the march.
The theme is of this year's May Day celebration is "Equal Rights, Equal Opportunity, Progress for All. It is time!" Organizers of the event want to zero in on the questions of inequality which is endemic to capitalist society.
